- Wissa deal done at 8:59pm, two hours after deadline
- Striker missed signing one form causing panic
- Now joining DR Congo for 世界盃 qualifiers
The DR Congo international’s move from London to Tynesidealmost collapsed after he failed to complete one of the required documents. A club representative had to sprint across the training ground to find Wissa, who hurriedly signed the form with just seconds left on the deal sheet extension. Despite the drama, the £55m transfer was officially completed at 8:59pm, just in time for Newcastle to secure their new striker before the extended deadline expired.
Wissa had driven overnight from London to Newcastle to undergo his medical and finalise the deal, having pushed all summer to join the Magpies. Despite Brentford‘s best efforts, he was eventually allowed to sign for Eddie Howe’s side.
Wissa scored 19 goals in the 英超聯賽 last season, and outscored summer departure Alexander Isak when you omit penalty kicks.
The striker will now quickly switch focus to international duty, joining DR Congo ahead of their World Cup qualifier against South Sudan on Friday.
